Garmin 1390LMT Traffic Info

Traffic information is updated constantly, and map updates are available up to 4 times a year, with no subscription, fees, or expiration dates.

There are alot of GPS units out there, even Garmin alone has alot of models to choose from. My original intent was to purchase the nuvi 2350LMT, but at the time, the model still had not been released. The major items that I was looking for were… Spoken Street Names, Lane Assist/Junction View, Lifetime Maps/Traffic, and I wanted a 4.3″ model. While many fall into the category from Garmin, the 1390LMT was firstly on sale but also had other useful features that I am very happy with.The bluetooth hands-free option is quite helpful since in NJ, it’s against the law not to use one. While the speakerphone on my phone is reasonable, the bluetooth aspect makes it much easier and easier. I can leave the phone in my pocket or bag, and once I turn the GPS on, it instantly connects. I can dial from the GPS, answer calls, and pull up my contact list without doing anything more than pairing the devices. I noticed that if there’s noise in the car, it’s hard to use, but turn of the radio when a call comes in and the GPS easily picks up my voice even with the unit being about 18″ away from my mouth. Definately a good feature. Also, another plus… if a Point of Interest has a phone number listed, you can call it without having to manually enter the phone number!Lane Assist and Junction View – we’ve all had those GPS units that say, ‘Continue straight in 500 yards,’ but don’t mention that the right lane is a right turn only in 500 yards and I’m going to mess up. The lane assist, on major roads, visually indicates the number of lanes and which lanes are acceptable to be in for the upcoming change in directions. Definately a helpful feature. Easy to read, and it doesn’t croud the screen.
Junction view is helpful, but in a recent trip from Boston to NJ, it only came into use maybe 3 or 4 times. Sometimes exits can be tricky, more so when there are many options (i.e. southbound, northbound, lower level bridge, upper level bridge). The junction view brings up an image on the screen showing up exactly which sign to follow so to not miss your turn. The picture is very clear on the screen and has helped me a few times. Not a feature that gets use all the time, but useful. I’d say the Lane Assist is a fantastic feature, and the Junction View is nice to have, but not required.

The traffic feature I’m still uncertain about. The lifetime traffic works using an FM transmitter built into the power cable. So, first off… in order to have the updated traffic information, the power cable must be used; running the unit off the battery soley will not give traffic updates. Secondly, the lifetime traffic is ‘free’ and lifetime due to small coupon/ads that come onto screen. While they don’t crowd the screen, they are a little annoying. They popup temporarily, I wish they didn’t exist. As far as the traffic goes, it has given me information on upcoming traffic, but also I have hit small spots of traffic that it had not warned me about. Again, while useful, it’s not too accurate. The GPS/traffic on my phone, using VZ Navigator from Verizon, does a better job of informing me of traffic I think. I am happy I have the feature but I’d also be okay with getting only Lifetime Maps to save money.

Overall I’m happy with my purchase. I know there are cheaper models out there, but I feel that the features on this model warrent the price. I didn’t mention many of the smaller features in this review as they are not usefully for navigation, but I can see myself looking at them. Good model, consider buying!
